How it works
Each row holds five boxes of numbers counting up by one, with one box in the middle left empty. The child reads the numbers on both sides of the gap and writes the one that belongs between them. Nothing on the page gives it away, so every row is real practice.
Why the gap is in the middle
A gap at the end of a row only asks what comes next, which a child can answer by counting on from the last number they see. A gap in the middle is a different and better question: the answer has to be bigger than the number on the left and smaller than the number on the right at the same time. Both sides matter, so the child has to hold the order in mind rather than just carry on counting.
Start with to 10. Move to to 20 once that is easy: it adds the teen numbers and the jump from 9 to 10, which is where most children need the practice.
Where it fits
