How it works
Each row shows one number in the middle, with an empty box before it and an empty box after it. The child writes the number that comes just before and the number that comes just after. Nothing else on the row gives the answer, so every box is real practice.
How this differs from missing numbers
Missing numbers shows a row of numbers with one gap, so the child can look at the neighbours on both sides. This sheet shows one number on its own. The child has to know what comes just before it and just after it without a row to read from, which is the step after filling a gap. It is recall rather than reading off the page.
Where it fits
Do missing numbers first, since reading a number out of a row comes before recalling one from memory. The next step on is ordering numbers, which stops asking about one number's neighbours and has the child compare a whole set and put it in order from smallest to largest. The printable hundreds chart is the reference a child can check when they get stuck, and count and color builds the numeral recognition this sheet assumes. The kindergarten and grade 1 pages gather the resources for this age, and when written arithmetic is the right level you can make a worksheet in seconds.
