Every shape here has the same number of sides as corners, so a sides-only sheet and a corners-only sheet would have identical answers. Seeing both columns together is the point.

How it works

Each row of the table is one shape, named at the left, then drawn three times at three different sizes. To the right of the line are two boxes, one for sides and one for corners. The child fills in both.

There is one pair of boxes for the whole row, and that is deliberate. The question is not how many sides that particular drawing has. It is how many sides a pentagon has, which is the same answer whichever pentagon you look at.

Why the shapes are different sizes

A big triangle and a small triangle both have three sides. Drawing each shape three ways is what turns this from counting into something worth knowing: the number is fixed by the kind of shape, and it does not change when the shape does. A child who counts one drawing and then checks the next two has just discovered that for themselves, which is better than being told.

Sides and corners always match

Both columns are on the same sheet on purpose. Once the table is filled in, the two numbers in every row are the same, and that pattern is the thing to notice. Every corner is where two sides meet, so a shape cannot have more of one than the other. Ask about it once the sheet is done rather than before.

Why there is no circle here

Because nobody agrees on the answer. Some books say a circle has no sides, some say it has one curved side, and some avoid the question. A worksheet needs one answer that is clearly right, so the circle sits this one out. It is still on the shapes worksheet, where naming it is all that is asked.

Where it fits

Do identify the shapes first, since naming a shape comes before describing it, and count and color covers the counting this sheet assumes. The kindergarten and grade 1 pages gather the resources for this age, and when written arithmetic is the right level you can make a worksheet in seconds.

A simple routine

Start with the triangle row. Count the sides of the biggest one together, touching each side and saying the number out loud. Then point at the smallest one and ask what its answer will be before counting it. Once the child says the same number without counting, they have the idea, and the rest of the sheet goes quickly.
