How it works
Each row is a picture equation: a group of pictures, a plus sign, a second group, an equals sign, and an empty box. The child counts the first group, counts the second, works out how many there are in all, and writes that number in the box. Nothing on the page gives the answer away, so every row is real practice.
Why pictures first
Before a child can add two numerals, they need to see that adding means putting two groups together and counting the whole. Pictures make that visible: the two groups stay separate on the page, and the total is something the child builds by counting rather than recalls. Start with sums to 5, which prints the largest pictures, then move to sums to 10 once counting on is comfortable.
Where it fits
This is the next step after the two counting sheets: count and color asks a child to read how many are in a group, and color the correct number of objects asks them to make a group of a given size. This sheet combines two groups, and picture subtraction is the partner sheet that takes some away again.
