How to use it
Start at the top. The number at the apex is the whole, the two at the base are the parts that multiply to make it. Read the two factors first and write the multiplication fact, then write it again with the factors swapped. Then cover a factor with a finger: the number you cannot see is what the whole divides by the other one to give, and that is a division fact. Four facts, three numbers, one picture.
Why a triangle
A list of four facts asks a child to remember four separate things. A triangle shows why they are the same thing seen from three corners, which is the whole point of a fact family: multiplication and division are not two topics to learn but one relationship read in different directions. Once that clicks, a forgotten division fact stops being lost and becomes something a child can rebuild from the multiplication they do remember.
