How to use it
Start with one row of pictures and count it: that is how many are needed for a single day. Then read the number of days printed underneath. Those two numbers are the multiplication, and the answer is how many are needed in all. Do the second row the same way. The number of days is the same for both rows, because both items are needed across the same stretch of days.
Only one day is shown
This is the part worth pointing out. The pictures show one day and only one day, so a child cannot get the answer by counting what is on the page. The number of days is written as a number instead of drawn, which means the multiplying has to happen in their head rather than on the paper. That is the difference between counting a picture and using one, and it is the step that makes multiplication genuinely useful.
Why two items
Two items share one number of days on purpose. It gives a child two facts from one situation, which is closer to how quantities actually work outside a worksheet, and because the two rows always have different amounts, the second answer can never be copied from the first. The two facts are different questions about the same stretch of days.
